Hyderabad defeat Bangalore in IPL final

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, May 24 (UPI) -- The Deccan Chargers fought off Anil Kumble's 4 for 16 spell Sunday to defeat the Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League cricket final in South Africa.

The Johannesburg thriller saw Herschelle Gibbs (53 not out) and Andrew Symonds (33 in 21 balls) take Hyderabad's total to 143-6 in 20 overs, enough to register a six-run win over the Bangalore team's 137 for 9 in the same number of overs, the BBC reported.

The Chargers thus erased their ignominious record of finishing at the bottom in the IPL's first season last year.

This year's matches were moved to foreign venues because of the month-long general elections in India and security concerns there.

The Challengers' hopes were raised when skipper Kumble clean bowled opener Adam Gilchrist with a brilliant delivery to claim his first wicket. It was Gilchrist, whose merciless batting the previous day, had taken his Chargers to the final.

The Challengers' early threat ended after Gibbs took charge, aided by Symonds.

In their batting, the Challengers' runs came mainly from Roelof Merwe (32) and Ross Taylor (27).

For his brave effort, Kumble was declared the Man of the Match, the BBC said.

Elsewhere in the cricketing world, England registered a six-wicket victory over the visiting West Indies in the second one-day international in Bristol, CNN reported.
