SAN DIEGO, May 23 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy limited Chicago to two hits over six innings Friday and San Diego went on to blank the Cubs 4-0 for its seventh straight victory.
Peavy (4-5) made his first start since invoking a no-trade clause in his contract and rejecting a deal that would have sent him to the Chicago White Sox. He struck out 10 while handing the Cubs their fifth straight setback.
The Cubs managed only three hits through eight innings, but Heath Bell had to come in during the ninth after Chicago put two runners on with two out. Bell walked Kosuke Fukudome to bring the tying run to the plate in the person of Derrek Lee, but Bell got Lee on a foul pop-up to grab his 12th save.
Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez drove in all of the runs -- Giles with a sacrifice fly in the first and a single in the fifth and Gonzalez with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a homer in the seventh.
Carlos Zambrano (3-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in 4 2/3.
