OAKLAND, Calif., May 23 (UPI) -- Reliever Jon Rauch stranded the potential tying and winning runs in the ninth inning Friday, preserving Arizona's 2-1 victory over Oakland.
Rauch came through at the end of a well-pitched game by both sides to earn his second save, both of which have come this week.
Chris Young gave Arizona a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a solo homer to make a winner out of starter Billy Buckner.
Buckner (1-0) was recalled from Class AAA Reno to make the start and it resulted in the third victory of his major league career. He allowed five hits and a run over 5 1/3 innings.
After picking up a save in extra innings Wednesday, Rauch was called upon again Friday and he retired the first two men he faced in the ninth.
Nomar Garciaparra, however, singled to center and Adam Kennedy drew a walk. Rauch then got Ryan Sweeney to ground out to end the game.
Trevor Cahill (2-4) had a solid outing in defeat, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out five over 6 1/3.
