ATLANTA, May 22 (UPI) -- Kenshin Kawakami turned in the longest outing of his major league career with eight shutout innings Friday, bringing Atlanta a 1-0 win over Toronto.
Kawakami, 33, signed with the Braves this year after pitching in Japan throughout his career. He improved to 3-5 after having not thrown more than six innings in any of his previous starts.
The Blue Jays managed just three hits off Kawakami, who struck out seven and got the win when the Braves scraped out a run in the eighth.
Mike Gonzalez gave up a one-out double in the ninth, but retired the next two batters on grounders to collect his seventh save.
Toronto starter Roy Halladay did not allow a run in a seven-inning stint and the loss went to Jesse Carlson (1-3) after he gave up the eighth-inning run.
Matt Diaz, batting for Kawakami, led off the eighth with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Yunel Escobar. From there, Diaz scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Casey Kotchman.
Toronto lost its fourth straight, but stayed a half game in front of Boston in the AL East when the Red Sox fell to the New York Mets.
