Sweden tops U.S. in team tennis event

DUSSELDORF, Germany, May 19 (UPI) -- Sweden used straight-set wins by Robin Soderling and Andreas Vinciguerra for a commanding 2-0 lead over the United States in the ATP World Team Championship.

Soderling took out San Querrey, 6-2, 6-2, and Vinciguerra was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Robby Ginepri Tuesday. Sweden has already clinched the best-of-three team victory over the United States even with a doubles match set for Wednesday.

Sweden, the event's defending champion, is 2-0 in Red Group round-robin play while the United States is 0-2. Also in the Red Group, Germany (1-0) has a 1-0 match lead over France (0-1) after Rainer Schuettler beat Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday. Germany and France are to complete their team match Wednesday.

Serbia improved to 2-0 in the Blue Group by beating Russia (0-2) in two singles matches. Viktor Troicki swept past Evgeny Korolev, 6-2, 6-2, and Janko Tipsarevic stopped Stanislav Vovk, 6-2, 6-4, to lock up the series for Serbia.

Argentina (0-1) took the lead over Italy (1-0) when Juan Martin del Potro defeated Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 6-4. The rest of the Argentina-Italy best-of-three series is Wednesday.

The winner of each group advances to the tournament finals Saturday.
