NHL: Detroit 5, Chicago 2

DETROIT, May 17 (UPI) -- Daniel Cleary scored twice for Detroit and the defending Stanley Cup champions downed Chicago 5-2 Sunday in the opener of their Western Conference title series.

Johan Franzen had a goal, his ninth of the post-season, and two assists, and Mikael Samuelsson and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for theRed Wings.

Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood blocked 30 Blackhawk shots.

Kris Versteeg and Adam Burish got the Chicago goals.

Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin turned back 38 shots.

Game 2 is scheduled Tuesday in Detroit.
