SEATTLE, May 17 (UPI) -- Franklin Gutierrez hit an RBI single in the ninth inning Sunday to boost the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.
His game-winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth rolled under the glove of Boston third baseman Mike Lowell and followed a key throwing error by Boston shortstop Nick Green.
Russell Branyan's lone hit was a solo homer in the second.
Like Gutierrez, Ronny Cedeno had two hits and one RBI, and Yuniesky Betancourt had a run and two hits for the Mariners, who had lost 10 of 12.
The winner was reliever David Aardsma (1-1).
Boston's J.D. Drew had two hits -- one a solo homer in the fourth.
Jason Varitek had one RBI and Green added two hits for the Red Sox, who have lost four of five.
The losing pitcher was reliever Ramon Ramirez (4-1).
Boston starter Justin Masterson yielded two runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
