SAN FRANCISCO, May 16 (UPI) -- Gary Sheffield scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning Friday and the New York Mets overcame a four-run deficit to defeat San Francisco 8-6.
New York won for the 10th time in 12 games, but needed a late-inning surge against reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum to get the game tied.
The Mets then took advantage of a throwing error by reliever Brian Wilson to hand the Giants their third straight loss.
Sheffield singled off Wilson (2-2) to open the ninth and went to second on a base hit by David Wright. Ryan Church then hit a grounder back to Wilson on the mound and the San Francisco pitcher threw wildly trying to start a double play.
That allowed Sheffield to score and Wright to go to third, from where he came in on a sacrifice fly by Omir Santos.
Brian Stokes (1-1) got the win by working the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez threw a perfect ninth for his 11th save.
Lincecum, who had a 3-0 record and a 2.25 ERA over his five previous outings, took a no-decision after giving up five runs on 10 hits over six innings.
