WOMEN'S DUBAI TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

MADRID, May 15 (UPI) -- No. 1 ranked Dinara Safina advanced in straight sets but fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic was ousted Friday at the $4.5 million Madrid Open.

Safina, who won the WTA event last week and was a finalist in the tournament the week before, defeated Alona Bondarenko 6-4, 6-3 despite six double faults. Even giving away those points she won 55 percent of the points on serve in the quarterfinal match.

Her semifinal opponent Saturday will be Patty Schnyder, who eliminated Jankovic 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 on the strength of six service breaks. Safina is 3-0 lifetime against Schnyder.

Ninth-seeded Carolina Wozniacki was an easy 6-0, 6-4 winner over Vera Dushevina in Friday's quarterfinals. Wozniacki won the first nine games of the match and took 63 percent of the points on Dushevina's serve.

The fourth quarterfinal saw Amelie Mauresmo come back for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 win over Agnes Szavay. Mauresmo was backed into 10 break-point situations in the first set but didn't face another the rest of the way.

Saturday will mark the first career meeting between Wozniacki and Mauresmo.
