Manny apologizes to Dodger teammates

MIAMI, May 15 (UPI) -- Suspended LA Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez has apologized to his surprised teammates.

Ramirez, the face of the Dodger franchise, received a 50-game suspension on May 7 for violating major league baseball's drug policy.

He apologized during short meeting at a Miami hotel before Friday's contest against the Florida Marlins.

"It was uncomfortable, I'll give you that," said manager Joe Torre. "He was a little anxious, you could sense an uneasiness I hadn't seen. He was remorseful, no question, and embarrassed."

Details of his positive test were not revealed, but he has said it was not steroids-related and stemmed from a prescription that included a substance on baseball's banned list.

Several media sources have said the banned substance was human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a female fertility drug that can also be used as a antidote to diminished testosterone levels at the end of a cycle of steroid treatments.

"He made a mistake and stood up to it," said teammate Andre Ethier.
