SAN ANTONIO, May 15 (UPI) -- Paul Goydos continued the tradition of low scoring at the Texas Open Friday by grabbing a three-shot lead with a 36-hole total of 12-under 128.
The lowest 72-hole score in the history of the PGA Tour was shot over the LaCantera Resort course six years ago -- a 254 turned in by Tommy Armour III.
Goydos could challenge that record over the weekend as he seeks the third victory of his tour career. He shot a 5-under 65 Friday, recovering from a bogey on his first hole.
Tied for second at 131 were former Texas Open champion Justin Leonard, Scott Sterling, John Mallinger, Mathias Gronberg and Ted Purdy.
Kent Jones, Fredrik Jacobson and Brian Davis were tied for eighth at 132.
David Duval made a cut for just the third time this year and was at 135. Defending champion Zach Johnson was also at 135.
"I really only had one mediocre shot all day, and that was on the first hole," Goydos said. "I made bogey, and after that I played reasonably well.
"This is why you play. If I wasn't comfortable where I am right now, I need to find another profession. This is why we play, practice and endure rough weeks, so we learn something, to improve and get better.
'And tomorrow is going to be another chapter in that learning process of becoming a better player."
