MADRID, May 14 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Dinara Safina survived a tougher-than-expected, third-round test Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.
Safina, the world's No. 1 player who will be seeking her first major title at the upcoming French Open, got past Lucie Safarova 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
Waiting for Safina in the quarterfinals will be Alona Bondarenko, who advanced Thursday with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 decision over Anna Chakvetadze.
Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic also earned a quarterfinal berth by dismissing qualifier Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-2. Jankovic will next meet Patty Schnyder, who won her third-round match on Wednesday.
In the day's biggest surprise, Agnes Szavay ousted seventh-seeded Victoria Azarenka 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Szavay will face unseeded Amelie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals.
Caroline Wozniacki filled out the quarterfinal bracket by defeating Alisa Kleybanova 6-2, 6-2. Wozniacki will meet Vera Dushevina in the next round.
