MLB: NY Yankees 3, Toronto 2

TORONTO, May 14 (UPI) -- Hideki Matsui put New York in front with an eighth-inning homer Thursday and the Yankees held on to nip Toronto 3-2.

New York finished a six-game road trip with a 4-2 mark and climbed to the break-even mark (17-17) for the season.

CC Sabathia (3-3) got the win by allowing two runs and five hits in eight innings. Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Nick Swisher drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to put the Yankees in front, but New York faced a 2-1 deficit going into the seventh.

Brett Gardner walked to lead off the seventh against Brian Tallet and Francisco Cervelli singled Gardner to third. Derek Jeter, who had missed the previous two games with a sore leg, then singled home Gardner to tie it.

Matsui's homer came on a 2-2 pitch leading off the eighth against losing pitcher Jesse Carlson (0-2).
