MADRID, May 13 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal remained unbeaten on clay this year with a second-round victory Wednesday over Jurgen Melzer at the Madrid Open.

Nadal ran his clay-court winning streak to 31, with 17 of those victories having come in 2009. He rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 decision, leaving him with a 148-6 record on the surface since 2005.

Nadal set up a third-round meeting in this Masters Series event against Philipp Kohlschreiber, who advanced by downing No. 13 seed Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2).

Novak Djokovic, seeded third, reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Oscar Hernandez. Djokovic has lost title matches to Nadal this year in Rome and Monte Carlo.

Andreas Seppi will be Djokovic's next opponent after outlasting Sam Querrey 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Andy Roddick, competing for the first time since his marriage last month, rallied to defeat Tommy Haas, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4. Roddick has 12 break opportunities in the match and converted only one.

Also advancing past the second round were Juan Martin del Potro, Gilles Simon, Nikolay Davydenko, Stanislas Wawrinka, Juan Monaco and James Blake.

Second-seeded Roger Federer will face Blake in the third round on Thursday.
