BALTIMORE, May 13 (UPI) -- B.J. Upton singled home what turned out to be the winning run in the ninth Wednesday and Tampa Bay survived a wild finish to defeat Baltimore 8-6.
The Rays took a 4-2 lead into the ninth inning and both teams wound up scoring four times in the final frame.
All of Tampa Bay's runs in the ninth came off Bob McCrory and all came after two were out. Carlos Pena scored on a wild pitch, after which Dioner Navarro, Upton and Ben Zobrist produced RBI singles.
Troy Percival came on in the bottom half of the inning to protect a six-run lead and promptly gave up a double to Cesar Izturis and back-to-back homers to Brian Roberts and Felix Pie.
After Aubrey Huff reached on a one-out double, J.P. Howell came on and allowed a run-scoring single to Melvin Mora before retiring the next two batters on grounders. Howell was credited with his first save that gave the win to Jeff Niemann (3-3), who allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings.
Rookie Brad Bergesen (1-1) suffered his first major league loss in his fifth start. He had three straight no-decisions prior to Wednesday's game.
