MADRID, May 11 (UPI) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France and David Ferrer of Spain led Monday's winners at the $5 million Madrid Open.
Tsonga beat Russian Marat Safin 6-4, 7-5 and Ferrer beat Argentine Guillermo Canas 6-2, 6-2. Safin, a former world No. 1, won the Madrid Open in 2004.
Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka beat Italian Marco Crugnola 6-2, 6-0; Argentine Juan Monaco beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-5; Spaniard Oscar Hernandez beat Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-3, 6-3; German Philipp Kohlschreiber beat Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-4; and Swede Robin Soderling beat Spaniard Ivan Navarro 6-4, 6-2.
Soderling plays former world No. 1 star Roger Federer and Hernandez plays last week's Belgrade champion Novak Djokovic in the second round.
