Jankovic wins her opener in Madrid

MADRID, May 10 (UPI) -- Serbia's Jelena Jankovic was among Sunday's first-round winners at the inaugural Madrid Open tennis tournament.

The fourth-seeded Jankovic downed Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-2, 6-1 in 80 minutes.

Tenth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to Australian Samantha Stosur; Agnes Szavay of Hungary beat 12th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2; Russia's Elena Vesnina trounced No. 13 seed Alize Cornet of France 7-5, 6-1; and Russia's Vera Dushevina was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over No. 14 Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.

Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic was leading Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 2-3 before the 16th-seeded Kanepi retired in the second set with a left hip injury.

Other match winners were Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, China's Na Li; Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, France's Aravane Rezai, Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino, England's Anne Keothavong and German Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Czech Petra Kvitova advanced when Sybille Bammer of Austria retired in the first set with a neck sprain.
