PHOENIX, May 9 (UPI) -- Home runs by Adam Dunn and Jesus Flores helped stake Washington to an early three-run lead Friday and the Nationals held on to nip Arizona 5-4.
After handing the Los Angeles Dodgers their first home loss of the year Thursday, the Nationals won their second straight road game. Prior to Thursday, Washington had recorded only two road victories all year.
The loss spoiled the debut of Arizona manager A.J. Hinch, who took over after Bob Melvin was dismissed Thursday.
The home runs by Dunn in the third inning and Flores in the fourth put Washington in front 4-1. Flores drove in his second run of the contest with a single in the sixth for what out to be the game-winner.
Shairon Martis lasted 5 1/3 innings to get the win, allowing three runs on nine hits. Kip Wells, the fifth Washington pitcher, worked the ninth for his first save.
Yusmeiro Petit (0-3) gave up four runs on six hits in four innings to take the loss.
