MADRID, May 9 (UPI) -- Elena Dementieva crushed Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 6-1 Saturday to start the inaugural Madrid Open tennis tournament.
The third-seeded Dementieva needed just under 80 minutes to beat her American foe and advance to the second round.
Two other ranked players in the French Open tune-up also won their openers.
No. 8 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia advanced after Czech Iveta Benesova retired in the second set. Petrova led 6-0, 2-1 when Petrova retired for an undisclosed reason.
China's Jie Zheng, the 15th seed, downed Russia's Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4.
In other first-round matches on Madrid's red clay, Russia's Anna Chakvetadze topped Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual, 6-4, 6-3; Virginie Razzano of France downed Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-0, 4-6, 6-3; and Russia's Alisa Kleybanova upended Silvia Soler Espinosa of Spain 6-3, 6-4.
