TURIN, Italy, May 8 (UPI) -- Daniel Vancsik had five birdies in a six-hole span Friday and grabbed the lead halfway through the European PGA Tour's Italian Open in Turin.
Vancsik finished with a 6-under-par 65 in the second round and is at 9-under 133 after 36 holes. He is one stroke ahead of Gareth Maybin, who had a three-stroke lead after Thursday's first round.
Birgir Hafthorsson, Roope Kakko and Anthony Wall are tied for third at 7-under 135. Kakko's 64, which tied the course record at Royal Park I Roveri set Thursday by Maybin, Friday tied for the day's best score. Andrew McLardy also shot 64 Friday and is tied for 16th.
Vancsik opened his round with a birdie and four pars before he had birdies at Nos. 6 and 7. He had a par at the eighth hole and then strung together three straight birdies to get to 6-under on the day.
Maybin, a tour rookie, had two birdies and a bogey en route to a 1-under 70. His opening round had featured six birdies and an eagle.
