CINCINNATI, May 8 (UPI) -- Johnny Cueto allowed a run over seven innings Friday and the Cincinnati Reds fought off a late St. Louis rally to down the Cardinals 6-4.
Cueto (3-1) limited St. Louis to five hits while striking out three. Reliever David Weathers surrendered three runs while recording only one out in the eighth, the first runs he has given up all season.
Francisco Cordero quelled the rally with a perfect ninth for his ninth save.
Jerry Hairston doubled in a run in the first and singled in another in the second while the Reds were building a 5-0 lead. It was Cincinnati's third win in four games.
Joel Pineiro (4-2) suffered the loss, coughing up five runs on eight hits over six innings.
The Cardinals' Tyler Greene hit the first home run of his career in the eighth inning. Albert Pujols went 0-for-4 and failed to reach base for the first time this season. He has played in all of his team's 29 games.
