PHOENIX, May 8 (UPI) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Thursday they had dismissed Bob Melvin as their manager.

Melvin's firing came after the Diamondbacks dropped a 4-3 decision in 10 innings to the San Diego Padres, leaving Arizona with a 12-17 record.

A new manager will be announced Friday amid speculation it will be A.J. Hinch, the team's director of player development.

"Bob has done great things for this organization," General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "Having worked with him for nearly four years, I have a great deal of respect for his character and skills. This is a difficult decision, but I feel that our organization needs to move forward with a new voice. I am grateful for all the success and memories associated with Bob."

The Diamondbacks also fired hitting coach Rick Schu and pitching coach Bryan Price announced his resignation.

This was Melvin's fifth season with Arizona. Since he replaced Bob Brenly, Arizona has a 337-340 record and has been to the playoffs once.
