MUNICH, Germany, May 8 (UPI) -- Jeremy Chardy ousted second-seeded Marin Cilic in quarterfinal play Friday at the $595,000 BMW Open clay-court tennis tournament in Munich, Germany.
Chardy survived a barrage of nine aces from Cilic and lost his serve just once in a tight 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 match. Cilic managed one more point than Chardy in the two-hour-long match but had his serve broken twice, including once in the third set that that decided the match.
Chardy will go against fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych in Saturday's semifinals. Berdych took a close 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision from Lleyton Hewitt. Berdych won 103 points on the day while Hewitt took 101, making the tiebreaker the only difference in the match.
Crowd favorite Daniel Brands earned his first ATP semifinals berth with 6-4, 1-1 win over Potito Starace, who retired because of a right hamstring injury. Mikhail Youzhny will meet Brands in the semis. He used a 10-ace attack to oust Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Saturday's semifinals winners will meet Sunday with a first-place check of $95,000 at stake.
