BOSTON, May 7 (UPI) -- Jason Bay highlighted a historic sixth inning with a three-run homer Thursday, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 13-3 bashing of Cleveland.
Boston scored 12 times in the sixth before an out was recorded, the first time that has ever happened in the American League.
The previous American League record for most runs scored in an inning before an out was made was 11, achieved by the Detroit Tigers against the New York Yankees in 1925. Boston's achievement tied the modern National League record, established by the Brooklyn Dodgers against Philadelphia in 1953.
The Red Sox sent 15 men to the plate in the sixth inning against three pitchers. Bay's home run came in his second at-bat of the inning after he had doubled home a run his first time up.
Rocco Baldelli, Jeff Bailey, George Kottaras and Dustin Pedroia all had two-run hits in the inning.
The win went to Tim Wakefield (4-1), who gave up four hits and two runs over six innings.
Jeremy Sowers (0-1) started the seventh and took the loss after allowing seven hits and seven runs.
