DETROIT, May 7 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions have signed free-agent linebacker Larry Foote to a one-year contract, days after his unexpected release by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The 28-year-old Foote, a Detroit native, was a fourth-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2002 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He was was not an immediate starter on the Steelers' vaunted defense but improved enough to play in 80 consecutive games in the past five seasons, including two Super Bowl victories.
Foote joins a Detroit team that hit rock bottom with the league's first 0-16 record in the 2008 season.
"The way I look at it, there's only one winner at the end of the year and the rest of the 31 teams are losers," Foote said. "From that standpoint, every year is a different year (and) it's a new challenge."
The 6-foot-1 inch, 239-pounder has amassed career totals of 431 tackles and 14 1/2 sacks in 110 NFL games.
