MUNICH, Germany, May 7 (UPI) -- No. 4-seeded Tomas Berdych rallied to a third-set tiebreaker victory Thursday, making the quarterfinals of the $595,000 BMW Open in Munich, Germany.

Berdych won fewer points in the match than Andreas Beck but advanced out of the second round of the clay-court tournament with a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win. Beck fired 10 aces at Berdych but also had to defend 13 break-point situations. Berdych cashed in just two of those opportunities.

While the German crowd was disappointed in Beck's loss, it was fired up by wild-card entrant Daniel Brands, from Deggendorf, Germany. Brands made the quarterfinals with a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) win over Julien Benneteau.

Also Thursday, Potito Starace defeated Simone Bolelli, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and Lleyton Hewitt stopped Thiemo de Bakker, 6-3, 6-4.

Friday's quarterfinal pairings find second-seeded Marin Cilic playing Jeremy Chardy, No. 7-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu meeting Mikhail Youzhny, Berdych going against Hewitt and Brands facing Starace.
