Djokovic advances at Belgrade tennis event

BELGRADE, Serbia, May 6 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Belgrade native Novak Djokovic delighted partisans Wednesday by advancing at the inaugural clay-court Serbia Open.

Djokovic was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 winner over Serb Janko Tipsarevic in a second-round match.

The runner-up to Rafael Nadal at last week's Italian Masters failed to convert on his five break-point chances in the second set and was broken once in a tougher-than-expected tussle against his compatriot, but improved his record to 31-10 this season.

In other matches, Lukasz Kubot of Poland was leading third-seeded Igor Andreev 3-2 in the first set when the Russian retired because of a rib injury; fifth-seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia downed Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4; and unseeded Kristof Vliegen topped countryman Christophe Rochus, the No. 8 seed, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Also winning Wednesday were Argentines Leonardo Mayer and Brian Dabul and Italy's Flavio Cipolla, who topped Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that had been suspended Tuesday.
