MUNICH, Germany, May 6 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Marin Cilic led Wednesday's winners at the BMW Open in Munich with a 6-0, 6-4 pasting of German favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The 20-year-old Cilic, No. 15 in the latest men's world rankings, improved his match record to a 23-6 this season in just in 77 minutes without his serve being broken in a dominant first set.
In one quarterfinal on Friday, the Croatian faces seventh-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Germany's Denis Gremelmayr.
Elsewhere Wednesday, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny, the 2007 BMW runnerup, beat third-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4; and Frenchman Jeremy Chardy downed sixth-seeded Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).
In the second round Thursday, Simone Bolelli faces fellow Italian Potito Starace and former world No. 1 star Lleyton Hewitt of Australia meets Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker.
The eventual tournament champion will pocket a $95,000 winner's check.
