World No. 1 Dinara Safina and former top-ranked star Jelena Jankovic were among Tuesday's second-round winners.
Serena, the 2002 champion, lost the first set 6-2, then won the second set 6-2. But Schnyder won all five of her break-point opportunities in the third set to beat the Australian Open and U.S. Open champ.
