Cilic, Berdych among winners in Munich

MUNICH, Germany, May 5 (UPI) -- Seeded players Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych each had straight-set wins Tuesday in the first round of the $595,000 BMW Open clay-court tournament in Germany.

Cilic, seeded second, won 75 percent of the points on his own serve and nearly half of the points when Dieter Kindlmann served in a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Cilic didn't face a break point in the match.

Berdych, seeded fourth, powered past Sascha Kloer 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 in a match that, outside of the tiebreaker, was close. Berdych had six aces and had his serve broken just once Tuesday.

Lleyton Hewitt, a wild-card entrant, collected his 500th ATP match victory in a 6-2, 7-6 (2-7), 7-6 (10-8) match against Philipp Petzschner that took more than 2 1/2 hours. Hewitt saved two match points before putting Petzschner away.

Fifth-seeded Rainer Schuettler and No. 8-seeded Igor Kunitsyn were upset. Schuettler dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Thiemo De Bakker while Kunitsyn was defeated 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 by Potito Starace.

Seventh-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu topped Lamine Ouahab 6-3, 6-2.

Other players advancing Tuesday were: Denis Gremelmayr, Daniel Brands, Andreas Beck, Julien Benneteau and Simone Bolelli.
