BALTIMORE, May 4 (UPI) -- Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird will run in the 134th Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, a racing official said Monday.
Mike Gathagan, vice president for communications for the Maryland Jockey Club, said he had been told Mine That Bird would leave Louisville, Ky., site of the Derby, either Monday or Tuesday of next week with the intention of running in the Preakness, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Mine That Bird trainer Bennie "Chip" Woolley said the decision was "good for the sport."
"You cannot have a Triple Crown winner without having the Derby winner in the Preakness," Woolley said. "That played into our decision but the horse looks super. I have never been to Baltimore, but it looks like I won't be able to say that in a few days."
Woolley had said Sunday he wanted to see how the horse rebounded from its surprising weekend victory at Churchill Downs before reaching a decision with co-owners Mark Allen and Leonard Blach.
Mine That Bird, a 50-1 shot with jockey Calvin Borel aboard, won the Derby by 6 3/4 lengths on a sloppy track.
