MLB: Washington 6, St. Louis 1

WASHINGTON, May 2 (UPI) -- Shairon Martis hurled a complete-game five-hitter Saturday, leading Washington to a 6-1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The contest was a battle between teams with the best (St. Louis) and worst (Washington) records to date.

Martis (3-0) did not walk a batter in any of his 110 pitches, struck out six, and helped himself offensively by scoring on Nick Johnson's fifth-inning sacrifice fly.

His lone mistake was the first career homer for St. Louis left fielder Colby Rasmus to start the seventh.

Adam Dunn stroked a two-out, three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Austin Kearns and Anderson Hernandez both had two hits and one RBI, while with his two hits, Ryan Zimmerman increased his hitting streak to a club-record 21 straight games, the longest in the majors this season.

The Nationals had lost four of five.

Rasmus had two of the five hits for the Cardinals, who had won three in a row.

The losing pitcher was starter Joel Piniero (4-1).
