The Red Wings recorded a four-game sweep of the Blue Jackets, who were making the first playoff appearance in franchise history.

Columbus battled to stay alive in the chase for the Stanley Cup by rallying from a 5-3 deficit with a pair of goals late in the second period. The game remained tied through almost the entire third period, but with R.J. Umberger serving the penalty on a call for too many men on the ice, Franzen ripped a slapshot past rookie goaltender Steve Mason.

Mason, the chief reason the Blue Jackets were in the playoffs, made 35 saves but was overwhelmed by a Detroit attack that makes the defending champion Red Wings a potential winner again.

Detroit took a 3-1 lead into the second period only to see Columbus tie it on goals by Rick Nash and Umberger. Marian Hossa then scored twice, the second of those goals coming on the power play with 8:34 to play in the second period, giving the Red Wings a 5-3 cushion.

Columbus fought back again, with Kris Russell and Fredrik Modin scoring their first goals of the series.

Chris Osgood allowed all five goals on 32 shots to get the victory.

Detroit outscored Columbus in the series 18-7. The Blue Jackets had managed no more than one goal in any game until Thursday.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, staved off elimination by downing Pittsburgh 3-0. The Penguins still lead 3-2 in the series. New Jersey also blanked Carolina 1-0 to take a 3-2 lead in their series.

Charlie Wi grabs first-round Zurich lead

NEW ORLEANS, April 23 (UPI) -- Charlie Wi, part of the first pairing on the course Thursday, shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead after one round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Wi has won nine times in Asia, but never on the PGA Tour. His best showing in the United States has been a tie for second at last year's Valero Texas Open, which will be next week's stop on the PGA circuit.

Jay Williamson, Nathan Green, Parker McLachlin, Charles Warren, John Merrick and Eric Axley shared second place at 67.

Kenny Perry, who bogeyed the final two holes of regulation and then lost in a playoff two weeks ago at the Masters, returned to action with a 3-under 69 that left him tied for 19th place. He got it to 5-under before suffering bogeys at the 15th and 17th holes of the TPC-Louisiana course.

"I did lose focus a little bit and kind of thinking a lot about two weeks ago and what was going on," Perry said. "I mainly got tired mentally, which got me tired physically. Even though I was 5-under par, it just seemed like I was really wearing down by the end of the day."

Current U.S. Amateur champion Danny Lee, playing his first tournament as a professional, shot a 4-over 76. Defending champion Andres Romero had a 73.

Brewers' Dave Bush flirts with no-hitter

PHILADELPHIA, April 23 (UPI) -- Dave Bush took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Thursday and Prince Fielder drove in three runs, carrying Milwaukee to a 6-1 win over Philadelphia

Bush's bid for a no-hit game ended when pinch-hitter Matt Stairs launched a solo homer off the right-field foul pole with one out in the eighth. Stairs' homer came shortly after Bill Hall robbed pinch-hitter Chris Coste of a hit on a grounder to third base.

Bush (1-0) eventually was charged with one run and two hits before being relieved by Mitch Stetter, who retired the final four batters.

Ryan Braun opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth and Fielder delivered a bases-loaded double in the fifth that made it 5-0.

Hall contributed a solo homer in the eighth.

Cole Hamels (0-2) took the loss and left the game in the fourth when he was hit in the left shoulder by a liner off Fielder's bat.

Chiefs trade Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 23 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Chiefs have dealt perennial Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta for a 2010 second-round pick in the NFL Draft.

The 12-year veteran had been asking to be traded during the off-season. The former California product was a first-round pick by the Chiefs in the 1997 draft.

During his tenure with Kansas City, Gonzalez set many club and league records. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 916 receptions, 10,940 yards, 76 touchdowns and 26 100-yard receiving games.

His 916 career receptions rank ninth in NFL history and fourth among players who were active in 2008. He has played in a team-record 188 regular-season games.
