NEWARK, N.J., April 23 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur recorded another career milestone Thursday with a 44-save effort that gave the New Jersey Devils a pivotal 1-0 victory over Carolina.

The Devils took a 3-2 lead in the opening-round series and will try to close out the Hurricanes Sunday on Carolina's home ice.

Brodeur gave up a last-second goal Tuesday that cost the Devils a 4-3 setback and allowed Carolina to even the series. The usually placid superstar goaltender went on a post-game tirade as a result.

He bounced back, however, to record his 23rd career playoff shutout, equaling Patrick Roy for the most in NHL history. During the past year, Brodeur has established NHL marks for most victories and most shutouts.

His record-tying shutout Thursday came in the 174th playoff game of his 15-year career, all of it spent with the Devils.

The lone goal came from David Clarkson, a power-play tally with 8:38 to play in the second period. Clarkson's goal came 17 seconds before a tripping penalty on Patrick Eaves would have expired.

Cam Ward took the loss despite making 41 saves.
