KANSAS CITY, Kan., April 23 (UPI) -- Claudio Lopez produced an early goal on a penalty kick Thursday and the Kansas City Wizards held on to defeat New York 1-0
New York defender Carlos Johnson took down Kansas City winger Herculez Gomez in the penalty area less than two minutes into the contest, bringing a red card from referee Michael Kennedy.
Lopez converted the kick for his second goal of the season.
Playing a man down for the rest of the game, the Red Bulls showed little on offense. New York had only two shots on goal against Kansas City's Kevin Hartman.
Kansas City (3-2-1) moved into first place in the Eastern Conference, a point in front of Chicago.
New York (1-3-2) has not won in its last 16 road games (0-10-6).
