NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- The NBA announced Wednesday that Chicago point guard Derrick Rose had been voted the league's rookie of the year.

Rose was drafted first overall last year out of the University of Memphis after having played only one season of college basketball.

He averaged 16.8 points per contest and missed just one game all season. He helped the Bulls reach the playoffs, where in his debut he scored 36 points in Chicago's surprising win over Boston.

Rose scored in double figures in each of his first 10 games as a pro, the first Chicago player to do so since Michael Jordan.
