ANAHEIM, Calif., April 22 (UPI) -- Gary Matthews Jr. drove in the winning run with an eighth-inning double Tuesday in the Los Angeles Angels' 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Matthews, who was 3-for-19 when he stepped in to face Brandon Lyon (1-2), drove in Torii Hunter from second to snap a 3-3 tie.
"It was a fastball in the middle of the plate and I just try to keep it as simple as possible," Matthews said. "My emotions spilled out tonight. It was great to get this win."
Hunter contributed a solo home run in the fifth off Detroit starter Armando Galarraga.
Brian Fuentes came on to pick up his third save of the season despite allowing three runners. Jose Arredondo (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
Curtis Granderson led the Tiger attack with a pair of home runs, including a blast off Angels starter Jared Weaver to lead off the game. His second came when he led off the third.
