CLEVELAND, April 22 (UPI) -- Brian Bannister allowed four hits over six shutout innings Wednesday and out-dueled Cliff Lee in helping bring Kansas City a 2-0 win over Cleveland.
Bannister (1-0) was recalled from Class AAA Omaha Tuesday when Doug Waechter went on the disabled list with a strained elbow.
He walked two and struck out one before giving way to Jamey Wright, who threw two perfect innings. Joakim Soria then put two runners on in the ninth, but escaped with his fifth save.
Lee, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, slipped to 1-3 despite allowing only the two runs on nine hits and striking out five over eight innings.
David DeJesus drove in a run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly after Coco Crisp had opened the frame with a double and moved to third on a fly ball to right by Mike Aviles.
The other Kansas City run came in the seventh on singles by Mike Jacobs, Alberto Callaspo and Willie Bloomquist.
