NEW YORK, April 20 (UPI) -- Simeon Varlamov got his first NHL career shutout Monday when Washington beat the New York Rangers 4-0 in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Varlamov, who held the Rangers to one goal in a 1-0 setback in Game 2 Saturday, stopped 33 shots for his first career post-season victory.
Alexander Semin scored twice and Brooks Laich and Tom Poti had power-play goals for the Capitals, who rebounded after dropping the first two games of the series at home.
Nicklas Backstrom added three assists and Alex Ovechkin had two assists for Washington, which had not blanked an opponent in the playoffs since a 3-0 win against Tampa Bay in 2003.
Henrik Lundqvist allowed four goals on 40 shots for the Rangers.
Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
