BOSTON, April 18 (UPI) -- Back-to-back overtime jump shots by Tyrus Thomas Saturday helped Chicago beat Boston 105-103 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round matchup.
The contest went to overtime tied 97-97 after Boston's Paul Pierce made only one of two free throws with two seconds left in the fourth period.
Rookie guard Derrick Rose, making his NBA playoff debut, led Chicago with 36 points and 11 assists. Ben Gordon scored 20 with three rebounds and five assists.
Thomas scored six of the Bulls' eight overtime points and finished with 16 with six rebounds and three blocked shots. Two other Bulls scored in double figures in Chicago's first-ever post-season win over the defending champion Celtics.
Rajon Rondo led Boston with 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Pierce scored 23 with seven rebounds and three assists, while Glen Davis, playing for the injured Kevin Garnett, scored 18 with three rebounds.
Garnett's knee injury likely will cause him to miss the post-season.
Boston's Ray Allen scored only four points.
