LUTZ, Fla., April 17 (UPI) -- Larry Nelson shot 6-under 65 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round at the Champions Tour Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in Lutz, Fla.
Nelson's lowest round since he shot a 65 June 1, 2007, in the first round at the Boeing Championship gave him the lead over Nick Price (66) at a windy TPC Tampa Bay golf course.
"I'm really excited," the 61-year-old former PGA champion and 19-time winner on the Champions Tour told reporters.
The Fort Payne, Ala., native has not had a top-five finish since 2005 and has not held an outright first-round lead since September 2001 at the SAS Championship at Cary, N.C. His bogey-free round included six birdies.
Mike McCullough and Mark McNulty both shot 4-under 67 to share third place. Four others, led by Jay Haas, were at 3-under 68, tied for fifth.
