HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., April 17 (UPI) -- Brian Gay birdied five straight holes on the front nine Friday and used a 5-under 66 to take the lead after the second round of the Heritage.

The leaderboard was dotted with former major championship winners trying to regain past form, but Gay moved into position to win for the second time on the PGA Tour. He finished 36 holes at the Harbour Town Golf Links with a 9-under 133 total.

One shot back was Todd Hamilton, who has not won since capturing the British Open five years ago. Hamilton shot a second-round 66.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, winless since he grabbed the second of those titles in 1998, shared third place at 135 with first-round leader Alex Cejka. Janzen recorded an ace Friday during a round of 70.

Rod Pampling was alone in fifth at 136 and Davis Love III fired a 67 to stand in sixth place at 137. Love, a one-time PGA Championship winner, has only one victory over the last three seasons and was not eligible for this year's Masters.

Jose-Maria Olazabal, Tom Lehman and Ernie Els -- who have combined for six major titles -- were among those at 139. Trevor Immelman, who is without a victory since capturing the 2008 Masters, was at 140.

Gay's only tour triumph came last year in Mexico.
