NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) -- Ailing New York Yankees right fielder Xavier Nady has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right elbow.
The move was made following a meeting with team officials Thursday morning before New York's home opener against the Cleveland Indians.
The Yankees said on their Web site that the injury may need surgery to repair its damage.
"The initial report is not good," Manager Joe Girardi said.
"I'll try to be as optimistic as I can and be back out there as quick as I can," Nady said. "It hasn't necessarily sunk in. It's frustrating, obviously."
Nady said he felt pain in the elbow, on which had Tommy John surgery in 2001 while with Pittsburgh, during an at-bat in the seventh inning of Tuesday's 7-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays.
