Oilers fire Coach Craig McTavish

EDMONTON, Alberta, April 16 (UPI) -- The Edmonton Oilers fired Coach Craig MacTavish after missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for a third straight season.

The Oilers' 38-35-9 record was good for an 11th place finish in the final Western Conference standings and missed the post season for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

They ended with 85 points.

Edmonton was 23rd on the power play, and only five other teams scored more points.

"On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Craig and his family for their outstanding commitment to the Edmonton Oilers and the city of Edmonton over the past 10 years," Edmonton General Manager Steve Tambellini said on the team's Web site after Wednesday's firing.

In his eight-year tenure, MacTavish compiled a 301-252-103 record and was 19-17 in the playoffs.

His best season was in 2005-06, when the eighth-seeded Oilers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals and eventually lost to Carolina in seven games.
