PHOENIX, April 16 (UPI) -- Grant Hill scored 26 points Wednesday and Phoenix earned a dubious distinction with a season-closing 117-113 victory over Golden State.
The game was the last to be completed in the 2008-09 regular season.
Phoenix finished with a 46-36 record and became just the third team in NBA history to win at least 45 games and miss the playoffs.
Golden State did so last season with 48 wins and the 1971-72 Phoenix team also missed the playoffs despite a 49-33 record.
Phoenix ended the season with three straight victories, overcoming a four-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Leandro Barbosa added 19 points and Shaquille O'Neal, playing 32 minutes despite it being a meaningless contest, had 15.
Golden State was led by Anthony Morrow with 33.
