MLB: Washington 8, Philadelphia 2

WASHINGTON, April 16 (UPI) -- Adam Dunn had a three-run first-inning blast Thursday and Washington added three more homers to beat Philadelphia 8-2 for its first win of the season.

The Nationals had lost their first seven games to start the season and became the last team in the majors to record a victory. Philadelphia had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Washington's early three-run lead was cut to one through six innings, but Josh Willingham had a solo homer in the seventh and both Elijah Dukes and Alberto Gonzalez contributed bases-empty shots in the eighth.

Shairon Martis (1-0) earned the win, giving up two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Joe Blanton (0-1) battled back after allowing the early home run, but he took the loss while giving up eight hits and striking out five over six innings.

After Blanton allowed consecutive singles to Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman with one away in the first, Dunn blasted a 2-2 pitch into the second deck in right.
