SEATTLE, April 16 (UPI) -- Ichiro Suzuki's grand slam homer highlighted a seven-run seventh inning Wednesday and vaulted Seattle to an 11-3 whipping of the Los Angeles Angels.
Endy Chavez and Ken Griffey Jr. also hit solo homers in the fifth to give Seattle the lead for good en route to its sixth consecutive victory. The winning streak is longer than any the Mariners had in 2008, during which Seattle had the worst record in the American League (61-101).
Jarrod Washburn (2-0) was the beneficiary of a 15-hit attack and got the victory by giving up two runs on four hits over six innings. Jered Weaver (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on 10 hits in five innings.
Seattle was clinging to a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh before sending 11 men to the plate against three pitchers.
The Mariners loaded the bases on a single by Griffey and walks to Adrian Beltre and Russell Branyan.
Jose Lopez then delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Griffey and Rob Johnson produced a two-run single. Johnson went to second on Yuniesky Betancourt's single and Franklin Gutierrez drew a walk to load the bases.
Suzuki then came through on a 3-2 pitch with his homer to right.
