NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) -- Chase Headley produced two of his three RBI in a five-run third inning Thursday and the San Diego Padres held on to defeat the New York Mets 6-5.
Headley went 4-for-4, helping the Padres win for the sixth time in seven games. They took two of the three contests in the inaugural series at the Mets' new stadium.
Jake Peavy (2-1), winner of the National League Cy Young Award two years ago, got the victory by allowing six hits and three runs over five innings. He walked four and struck out five.
Heath Bell worked a perfect ninth to earn his fifth save in as many tries this season.
New York took the lead on Carlos Delgado's three-run homer in the first, but the Padres sent 10 men to the plate in the third against losing pitcher John Maine (0-1).
Henry Blanco opened the inning with a walk, Everth Cabrera singled and the runners moved up on a sacrifice by Peavy. Jody Gerut then singled in Blanco and a base hit by David Eckstein brought in Cabrera.
Brian Giles grounded out to first, advancing both runners, and Adrian Gonzalez drew an intentional walk to fill the bases. Headley then came through with a two-run single and Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in the final run of the inning with a base hit.
After Headley doubled in a run in the fifth, the Mets closed within 6-5 on a two-run homer by Ramon Castro in the eighth.
