Russian Zvonareva second-round winner

CHARLESTON, S.C., April 14 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva, last year's runner-up, was a second-round winner Tuesday at the women's $1 million Family Circle Cup.

Zvonareva, who lost to Serena Williams in the 2008 finale, defeated Paraguay's Rossana de los Rios 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday. Zvonareva, world No. 6, has won two events so far this year on the WTA Tour.

Fourth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova also reached the third round Tuesday with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Austrian Patricia Mayr.

In other second-round play, sixth-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli beat Latvian qualifier Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-3 and seventh-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova beat Austrian Tamira Paszek 6-4, 6-0.
