MONTE CARLO, Monaco, April 14 (UPI) -- Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were straight-set winners Tuesday in second-round matches at the $3.6 million Monte Carlo Rolex Masters tournament in Monaco.
Djokovic, ranked No. 3 in the world, knocked off Oscar Hernandez 6-1, 6-2 and faced just two break points in the match. He had just one ace on the clay court in Monte Carlo but won 81 percent of the points off his first serve.
Murray, rated fourth, was nearly as impressive in a 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of Victor Hanescu. Murray broke Hanescu's serve five times in eight tries.
Two other seeded players were beaten, however. No. 6-seeded Gilles Simon was ousted by qualifier Andreas Beck 7-5, 6-1; and 11th-seeded Tommy Robredo fell 6-2, 6-4 to Juan Monaco.
In addition to the four second-round matches, the first round was completed with nine matches. The highlight of that batch was Marat Safin's 6-4, 7-5 win over Lleyton Hewitt in a battle of former world No. 1s.
Ninth-seeded Gael Monfils was upset 6-3, 6-1 by Janko Tipsarevic while 10th-seeded David Ferrer took out Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 6-3; No. 12-seeded David Nalbandian got by Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3; and Albert Montanes knocked out 16th-seeded Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) in first-round play.
Also winning Tuesday were Jean-Rene Lisnard, Martin Vassallo Arguello, Ivo Karlovic and Fabio Fognini.
